Installing a sprinkler system this spring? Having your own irrigation system is a great way to maintain the health and aesthetic of your lawn or garden. Though most of the system is underground and out of sight, it’s important that you have a good understanding of the different components of a sprinkler system. Not only will the installation be a breeze with the knowledge you have all of the correct parts, but you’ll also be able to identify any issues with your sprinkler system in the event something happens.

Sprinkler systems may seem like daunting machinery, but fortunately, the basic elements of an irrigation system are relatively simple. Here’s a brief explanation of the different components of a sprinkler system:

  • Sprinkler Heads. Sprinkler heads are the most visible part of the system and are strategically placed around the yard to provide a good amount of water coverage around your yard. There are a variety of sprinkler heads that you can get, but the most popular are sprinkler heads that retract to below grade level when they are not being used and pop back up when they are. You can also get sprinkler heads that oscillate, change water pressure, or bring different amounts of water to different areas.

  • Pipes and Risers. Below the surface, a sprinkler is made up of a series of pipes and risers, which bring the water from the water source and to the sprinkler heads. The pipes, called PVC pipes, are the main horizontal pipes that bring the water, and risers are the vertical pipes that deliver it to the sprinkler. Both are essential to the function of your sprinkler system!

  • Control Valves. The control valves will control the flow of water from your sprinkler. They are often connected to an automatic timer to control when the valves open up to water your yard. They are sometimes grouped to make the wiring and installation easier than having valves each run independently.

  • Timer. Speaking of timers, that’s another important component of your sprinkler system. Timers will allow you to control when the water comes on. Timers will let you set a regular watering schedule without having to manually do it yourself. Some timers will allow you to choose different zones to be watered at different times, with different water pressure, directions, and movements.

  • Drains. Don’t overlook this- definitely have some drains ready to install! Put drains at the lowest spots and ends of your sprinkler line. This will keep water out of the pipes as soon as the water turns off, which will prevent rusting or breakdown of the system.
