What is a Water Irrigation System and How do I Choose the Right One?
Keep your lawn and plants looking healthy and green with a water irrigation system. These systems are extremely convenient as you don’t have to drag your hose and sprinkler all over your yard, and you don’t have to go outside to manually turn it on.
Not only do water irrigation systems take the hassle out of having to water your yard, but they also save you water and money. Think about when you manually water your yard with a hose and sprinkler. You typically have an area that you would like to get watered, but you aren’t able to specifically target that area with the amount of water that it needs. Water can overshoot your targeted area and get areas that don’t need it. You could also forget that you have the sprinkler on and let it run longer than you need to. With water irrigation systems all those problems go away. Instead, you are able to program them to discharge more precise amounts of water in targeted areas, conserving water.
Now that you know the benefits of water irrigation systems, how do you choose the right one?
First, answer the question, “what will I be watering?” Is the water irrigation system for your garden and plants, or is it for your lawn? This will make a huge difference.
If you want to water your garden and flower beds, you don’t want a sprinkler system that will just shoot water over a large area and soak your plants and vegetables. If you do this, you are opening yourself up to disease problems, weed growth, and inefficient watering. Instead, you’ll want a system that will apply water at the root system, like a drip irrigation system. These systems are much more efficient because you are able to target the root zones and provide slow and deep watering.
At the most basic level, drip irrigation systems are tubes in the ground that have holes in them. The holes are tailored to irrigate most efficiently. For example, if you have shrubs planted two feet apart, the holes in the tubes will also be two feet apart. With drip irrigation systems, you are not wasting any water at all.
If you want to water your lawn, we suggest a sprinkler system. Deciding what type of sprinkler to use depends on your lawn size and typography. There are two types of sprinkler heads that you can use. One is a fixed-spray sprinkler. These sprinklers do not alternate their spray patterns, which allows them to discharge a lot of water in a short amount of time. For this reason, they are best for flat surfaces. The other is a system with a rotor head. These sprinklers operate by rotating water back and forth or in circles over your lawn. Because of their lower application rate, they are the best option when watering sloped surface areas.
If you have a large yard that you would like to water, even if it is flat, a system with a rotor head is your best option.
With water irrigation systems you can target water distribution more precisely with irrigation zones. The way water irrigation zones work is before you install your irrigation system you break your yard into different zones. You then decide how much water you would like each zone to get. For example, zone A in your yard will get X amount of water while zone B gets Y amount of water. Once you’ve established your zones, you are then able to program your irrigation system accordingly.
